I’m Traci, a graphic designer with a passion for magazines. I am about to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Journalism with a specialization in Editing and Graphic Design. I first realized my passion for design when I was placed in yearbook class my sophomore year of high school. I have enjoyed designing and learning as much as possible ever since, and I have worked with multiple publications as well.
I worked as a Design + Layout Intern for niNe. magazine, a Christian-based, online publication for teenagers and young adults. Through this internship, I furthered my design and layout skills by designing various print pages, web pages, online advertisements, social media images, website banners, and magazine covers, and I furthered my photography skills by taking various photographs for the magazine. I also learned the ropes of organizing and photographing a photoshoot with two models, and worked on a marketing team to create a media campaign titled The Faceless Generation, of which I helped with a photoshoot and designed various materials to send to church youth groups.
As co-editor and designer for a health and fitness magazine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The Well-Being, I have increased my knowledge of running and editing a magazine and delegating to a staff, organized and attended fundraisers, furthered my skills with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop by designing print pages and magazine covers, and brainstormed and incorporated ideas in regards to the overall design. By designing, creating, planning, and delegating to others through these positions, I have prepared myself for future positions and have gained the insight needed to become a designer for a magazine.
In my time at UNC-CH, I have had the amazing opportunity to take classes at the best Journalism school in the nation. During my final semester at UNC-CH, I was provided the chance to take magazine design. In this class, we produced two magazines, one print and one iPad. Spark magazine was our print publication targeted at promoting happiness for 20-40 year olds. I created designs for three articles written by the magazine writing class at UNC-CH, as well as helped edit and critique other pages in the magazine. Leap N’ Leaf was our iPad magazine. It is a nature and outdoor magazine for 12-14 year olds. I created three interactive designs for the magazine, one being my individual idea and the other two being articles written by the magazine writing class at UNC-CH. For Leap N’ Leaf magazine, I also designed the icons and splash pages.
